About this blog

Singapore
Singapore is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world. This rare mix of 5 million people in an area the size of London, has lead to a vast array of culinary experiences. As a bit of a foodie, I plan on experiencing as much of this as possible! Plus, as a designer I will be capturing any creative or just intriguing products, packaging and retail outlets I see a long my journey. Enjoy.

Khmer BBQ

5 different meats to cook on the coal fueled BBQ situated in the centre of the table. You will notice 5 little symbols sticking out of each of the pots of meat, each distinguishing what type of meat it is. We had, Beef, Ostrich, Kangaroo, Crocodile, and Snake.
Beef, Ostrich and Kangaroo were really tasty with a tender texture, whilst Snake was a bit tough and Crocodile was so tough you couldn't even bite through it. I think there is a reason why they are top of the food chain.

Cambodia Pot Throwing

I made an attempt of making my own plates = unsuccessful.
As you can see you can't eat much off that plate.

Khmer cooking course, Part 1

Part of Design Bridge's Food and Drink Trail of Cambodia, was a Khmer (Cambodian) cooking course.
The first part of the day was gathering our ingredients from the local wet market.

Khmer cooking course, Part 2

The next task was to actually cook it!
We split in to teams and we had to cook 3 course.
1. A Chicken Curry
2. Steamed fish and banana leaf parcels
3. A dish of our choice using the left over ingredients, we chose to make Fish Satay of Lemon grass skewers.

We even sculpted a DB 25 symbol!

Not enough as we didn't win the competition, but our team loved what we cooked and the whole day was a great adventure.

Nest, Cambodia

With reference to a previous post:

As a designer at Design Bridge Asia, I was invited on their 25th Anniversary Holiday to Cambodia to take part in a Food Trail. Perfect blog material.

Nest, was our first destination. A 3 course lunch, with a few accompanying local beverages, Angkor Beer.

Maison Ikkoku Cafe

Maison Ikkoku is a new Cafe/Boutique/Bar on Kandahar Street, Singapore. It is another welcome introduction to the hip Kampong Glam area.
The interior is really cool, designed by their in-house designer. Maison Ikkoku means 'house of the moment' so the design reflects pausing moments in time. The furniture suspended from the ceiling is the best example of this big idea, with the rest of the furniture appearing on the second floor mens boutique as if it is falling through the building.
The owners are well travelled and this is reflected in their exceptional food quality and the flat white Coffee was the best I have tasted in Singapore.

Battered Mars Bar at Smith's Fish and Chips, Singapore

A northern UK delicacy has made it 16,000km to the shores of Singapore.... the battered Mars Bar! Oh and Fish and Chips. Both are highly recommended.

Level 33 Sunday Roast

Simply... Amazing! I can not recommend this place enough, for a good old Sunday Roast.

Great food, coupled with micro-brewed beer and incredible views over the Marina Bay.

Next up, I need to sample the rest of the dinner menu.

Marché 313@Somerset

We visited Marche Restaurant on a Friday evening, 7pm, and we had to queue for 30min to get in!
Expectations were high after waiting so long and if you just ignore the strange cliché swiss decor as you proceed to the basement restaurant, then the rest of it did not disappoint.

I think its success lies in the concept. It is setup like a Market Place. On arrival you are given a credit card, that you hand over to the staff behind the different food stands and they charge for the individual order. You can choose from a wide variety of dishes, loosely based around Swiss cuisine.

We went for a Swiss classic of a Rösti, with Smoked Salmon and creme fresh, plus a Ham, Mushroom, and swiss cheese crepe. Washed down with a couple of glasses of wine of course!

They also do a great selection of fresh breads and pastries, which is quite difficult to find in Singapore, so if you can't face the queue then the deli is a reasonable substitute.

The Longest Table in the World!

On July 25th, 2011, we visited Little India, Singapore to be part of a World Record attempt. The worlds longest table, seating 550 diners, and spanning 160m down Racecourse Road.
The novelty of sitting on a massive table with loads of random people diminished and my focused turned to the food! There was about 30 dishes, all coming from different Singaporean Indian Restaurants. The food was fantastic, all your favorite Indian dishes. The most interesting dish was Quails egg Masala, although it wasn't my favorite curry, it was at least a different take on a classic.

Fresh...Rabbit Paella

My Dad makes a mean Paella, but like all great men he would be lost without his wife, my Mum, who provided the finest ingredients; Scallops, Prawns, Chicken, Chorizo, Saffron. However, after a day out in the country at a friends house I thought I would add an important ingredient to the traditional Spanish Paella... Rabbit!

Earlier in the day I caught a 10pound Carp, feeling lucky, I thought I would try and hunt for a Rabbit in the evening. It was an equally as successful trip and I bagged myself a Rabbit for the dish. I obviously am clueless about preparing a Rabbit so left that to my good friend Archie to show me the ropes and then I delivered it to my mother the very next day, with a big grin on my face!

THE Hot Chocolate Shop!

I used to live in Windsor, UK and just across the bridge from Eton is a little Cafe, the Chocolate Theatre Cafe and I love it!

Every week I used to visit. I have always wondered what Roy the owner thinks of me, because each week I would have a new friend, date, relative, work colleague with me, someone new to introduce to the Hot Chocolates and any excuse for me to indulge in another!

5 years on and when I am back in the UK I always go to visit.

You must try one of their extensive range of Hot Chocolates, accompanied by a breakfast, soup, platter or Sandwich, plus if you too have a ultra-sweet-tooth, then treat yourself to one of the incredible homemade cakes and pastries.

I found this little video on you tube...

The Devonshire Arms - Middle Handley

On a recent trip back to the UK I visited the Devonshire Arms, Middle Handley, Derbyshire.

I strongly recommend you go visit if you are in the area, (I know, that is unlikely for the majority of the people that read this! It's a long way from Singapore) however the food is fantastic and even though it has gone through a modern refurb they have managed to keep hold of that traditional UK pub feel.

I had Scallops, Lamb Shank and Treacle Tart, all top notch.
All washed down with a local ale and a glass of Rioja!

Watch this space....

I work for a brand design company called Design Bridge. This year they turn 25 years old. Over the past 25 years we have worked with food and drinks companies throughout the globe. To celebrate this, each of our 3 offices are heading on their own individual foodie adventure. London to Padstow, Cornwall, UK. Amsterdam to a Maastricht, Netherlands. Singapore to Cambodia!

As a special twist, Design Bridge ran a competition to win a silver ticket. A lucky draw that gives the winner the chance to attend not only their own office trip, but one of the other offices.

All the offices hooked up via video call and the draw took place......... and one of the winners is........... Me!

Watch this space I will capture both the UK and Cambodia trip.

Braised Duck

This is duck is fantastic. It's very basic, but it hits the spot. All this for $3. You can find 'Duck man' in a small food court on Sultan Gate Place, next door to the 'Claypot Chicken man' from an earlier post...

Thai Pancakes - Kanom Thai

On a recent visit to Thailand I tried Kanom Thai, or Thai crispy pancakes. They come in sweet or savory form. The savory form contains coriander (the herb of the devil) so avoided that one, and opted for the sweet version. The white, gooey, fluffy, centre, which is topped with orange rind, is the main event. It tastes like a marshmallow meringue. A definitely for any fellow sweet tooth.

I was particularly impressed by the way they made them...
