The Longest Table in the World!

On July 25th, 2011, we visited Little India, Singapore to be part of a World Record attempt. The worlds longest table, seating 550 diners, and spanning 160m down Racecourse Road.

The novelty of sitting on a massive table with loads of random people diminished and my focused turned to the food! There was about 30 dishes, all coming from different Singaporean Indian Restaurants. The food was fantastic, all your favorite Indian dishes. The most interesting dish was Quails egg Masala, although it wasn't my favorite curry, it was at least a different take on a classic.

Stingray and Gluttons bay

Gluttons bay is a Makansutra sponsored Food Court. Makansutra publishes food guides and celebrates Asian food culture and lifestyle. Subsequently, this is meant to be one of the best food courts in Singapore, so I took the opportunity to try Stingray... and... I thought it was delicious!

Apparently the seasoning and marinade helped, but I thought it tasted great. Tasty, meaty, not very fishy and no bones, all things I look for in fish dishes!

I had a portion of White Carrot cake on the side, not that great, check out an early post to find out more about carrot cake.

Definitely worth a trip.

Whilst visiting Gluttons Bay I was lucky enough to catch the end of The Trees & The Wild playing at the Mosaic Festival.

Shrove Tuesday

In the UK, the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of lent, is Shove Tuesday or Pancake Day! A tradition of eating and celebrating before the fasting that (is meant to anyway!) take place in for the 40 days of Lent.

We celebrated here in Singapore. It was a feast of sweet and savory pancakes, my favourites being, Cheese and Tomato, and Vanilla Ice cream, Sultanas, and Baileys!

CNY tossing the salad

Our Chinese New Year Celebrations included 'Tossing the Salad'. This is when everyone puts their chopsticks into the salad and tosses it together. The action of mixing the 'yu sheng' is called ‘lo hei’, and hei means ‘to rise’, again symbolising prosperity.

So throwing it up in the air should hopefully bring you prosperity.

bakkwa 肉乾

As Chinese New Year approaches this will be sold by the bucket loads! It is Bakkwa, or BBQ Pork slices as I like to call it. It is a dried, sweet and salted pork that resembles jerky, but it is a bit fresher, softer and requires less chewing as the amount of fat in the Bakkwa makes it very tender.

Singaporean Chinese Wedding

It was an honour to be invited to a Singaporean Chinese wedding, we were warmly welcomed into their family home, encouraged to indulge in a huge spread of food from all walks of Singaporean origins from curry, to Duck, to Sushi, plus several desserts. We were even lucky enough to witness the traditional Tea Drinking Ceremony.

Hot Plate and Cash Fire

Hot plate teriyaki steak, but what followed was more interesting. On the walk home, we stumbled across a Chinese festival. We are going to head there on Saturday to find out more, but in the meantime I spoke to one of the guys burning what looked like brand new napkins. We were wondering why? Turns out they are brand new, ornately patterned paper sheets, produced to represent Money and by burning the “money” then they believe the God will bring them wealth.
